Celebrating freedom
though art

April 25th is Freedom Day in Portugal—a day that celebrates the end of dictatorship and the beginning of democracy. Here, graffiti is a way of expressing that freedom.

Juntas Hacemos Más (Together We Do More) is a unique street art festival held across Lisbon and Mexico, supported by the Mexican Embassy. The event brought together 45 female graffiti artists from across Europe and South America for two days of painting, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

The festival celebrated graffiti as a powerful form of freedom and expression—a recognition that street art plays a vital role in advocating for freedom of speech and reclaiming public space. It was inspiring to see this acknowledgment from institutions, and even more powerful to share the experience with an incredible group of women artists.

For me, this event was a rare opportunity to connect with artists from South America, exchange stories, and reflect on the different contexts we come from. Painting in London, for instance, feels very different compared to painting in Mexico—whether it's the cultural backdrop, the reasons that drive us to paint, or how people engage with the art.

But no matter where we are, one thing remains the same: street art transforms spaces. I wish you could have seen the walls before—plain, grey, lifeless. And in just two days, they became a vibrant alley filled with colour, energy, and meaning.
