I called this piece “Disco” because it’s inspired by the bold, vibrant aesthetic of the 1980s—a time when wild color combinations and flashy graphics dominated the design of skateboards and snowboards. The color palette of pink, green, white, and a touch of blue is a nod to the electric, eye-catching trends of that era, where neon hues and geometric patterns were all the rage.
In the 1980s, both skateboarding and snowboarding design began to embrace a more playful, rebellious attitude. Skateboard decks were often adorned with bold graphics, from neon splashes to surreal illustrations, all designed to stand out in skate parks and halfpipes. Snowboards, which were still a relatively new phenomenon at the time, followed suit with flashy, angular designs that captured the era's dynamic energy. Bright, contrasting colors like pink, green, and blue were a staple in these designs, echoing the louder, more carefree spirit of the decade.
When painting this piece, I wanted to create something that mirrored the essence of those dynamic and daring designs—something that felt strong, fast, and full of energy. The bold color palette and geometric shapes give the board a sense of speed and movement, almost as if the person riding it could feel the rush of motion just by looking at it. The contrast of soft pinks and blues with sharper geometric forms embodies the fearless and fun attitude of the 80s, blending vibrant visuals with a sense of power and momentum.
